About Mentor, Ohio
Mentor has a longer history than most people expect from a modern retail hub. James A. Garfield bought a farm here in 1876 and ran his 1880 presidential campaign from its front porch, a strategy so unusual for the time that it became known as the "front porch campaign," and thousands of supporters traveled to what was then a town of a few hundred people just to hear him speak.
That home, known as Lawnfield, is preserved today as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site.
Mentor is also home to Headlands Beach State Park, the longest natural beach in Ohio, which draws more than two million visitors a year, along with the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Mentor Marsh, both popular with birders and anyone who wants a quieter stretch of Lake Erie shoreline.
